It has been almost a year since President Obama was sworn into office and hope has almost faded at the Voice of America and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting.

September 04, 2008. AFGE Local 1812 appealed Peter Sutton's (FLRA Regional Director), decision regarding the VOA TV Video Editors' desire to be represented by a Union. On June 9, 2008, Mr. Sutton rejected the POVs' request to unionize claiming that they had no right to organize since they did not meet the definition of employee under 5 U.S.C. Section 2105(a).
January 20, 2009 was a remarkable day filled with both hope and apprehension. The new President reminded us again that some tough times are ahead but was careful to reassure us that if we work together we will get through it together.
For the past several months we have seen the mainstream media dance around the word depression without actually admitting that we are in one. At first it was just a recession. Then it was a deep recession of undetermined length. Then slowly but inexorably the mainstream media began reporting the story in terms of the worst economic crisis since the 1930's. But still the mainstream media has been very careful not to actually declare it a depression.
